The Dodge County Healthy Soil – Healthy Water, an alliance of farmers and lake property owners are presenting the second annual Save our Lakes seminar. This free seminar will change the way you look at agricultural practices. You will see and hear from local farmers and nationally recognized speakers and learn how today’s agricultural practices are reducing sediment and nutrient runoff into our lakes and rivers.
Local farmers will present via pictures examples of cover crops including interseeding cover crops with corn and using covers with manure. Results from test plots of cover crops will illustrate the many advantages including economic advantages from cover crops. The nationally recognized soil experts, including Ray Archuleta, will show why healthy soil is the key to protecting from run off. Tests show that healthy soil can absorb up to 9 inches of rain per hour without run off.
This past summer UW research students documented shoreline erosion along creeks leading to our lakes resulting in more sediment and nutrients running into our lakes and rivers. You will see plans that are now in the works to rip rap these creeks to reduce that erosion.
Learn about the new cover crop incentive program being launched this spring. This program will provide incentive payments to help farmers establish cover crops and will include payments for seed, equipment rental and soil testing. Funds from this program are being made available from a government grant and from lake group donations.
Plans for other activities by the Dodge County Healthy Soil Healthy Water group will be reviewed including pontoon rides for farmers this coming summer. Last summer over 100 farmers participated in this program to learn about water quality and what lake property owners are doing to prevent shoreline erosion and runoff from their lawns.
An opportunity to hear farmers and lake property owners working together to improve the water quality in our lakes and rivers which results in greater lake property values as well as better fishing and recreation on our lakes for everyone.

On Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 6:00, meet Steve Hjort of Eco-Resources Consulting and learn about the shoreline and habitat restoration project for Anthony Island. The Lake Sinissippi Improvement District will be holding the monthly meeting and invited Steve to present his company's finding from the Anthony Island and Near-Shore Lakebed Assessment and Shoreline Restoration Plan. The report showed that Anthony Island has eroded between 27 to 68 feet since the 1940's. He will explain different options to stop erosion and remove invasive plant species. The goal is to return Anthony Island to it's native habitat and decrease further erosion.
